MASCOT & LEGEND
Whimsy is a playful wisp who loves adventure and taking people off the beaten path to find fun, new, and exciting experiences to revel in. They are a friendly wisp who doesn’t mind a little tender mischief.
I chose a will-o’-the-wisp for the face of Whimsy Supper Club due to my fascination of fairy tales, folklore, and these particular spirits with a will. Normally depicted as evil or mischievously mean, I find that will-o-the-wisps symbolize adventure, a willingness to leave the usual path, and are guides leading to other places where you’ll discover new planes. I find them to be a playful reminder that it’s okay to find your own path.
FUN FACT: Did you know that will-o’-the-wisps are actually a naturally occurring phenomenon in marshes and bogs? These wetland types create the ghostly orbs by forming them from flammable gas of decaying plant matter under the water. Once the gas hits the surface, it ignites, creating that ghostly orb that gently floats in the air.
Whimsy came about from a variety of inspirations and influences. The face is kind of similar to the forest spirits from Princess Mononoke, its color is from old depictions of their light or flame being blue like in brave and their playful personality from the sprites similar to ones in other Hayao Miyazaki films. The flame-like yet plant-like look gives them an organic air representing the natural world or nature.
